If your home, office or other building is struggling to maintain the temperature you’ve set it at, your insulation could be bad.

What’s worse is that you're probably paying a lot more for heating and cooling when you shouldn’t be. Who likes throwing money away? Nobody.

Many of our customers ask, "What's the recommended insulation for a home or commercial building in Madison?" which is close to the right question they should be asking. What we say they should be asking is, "What's the recommended R-value for insulation in my home or commercial building?"

The Department of Energy recommends a R-value of R-49 for the Madison, Wisconsin area and this can really only be efficiently achieved with spray foam insulation.

But, what is R-value? We'll answer this and more here on our website so you can be confidently educated to make the right choice for your individual insulation needs.

What is R-value?

The R-Value is a measurement of how well a barrier resists the flow of heat. The higher the R-Value, the better the barrier works. Now, there are some very complicated formulas that we could go into to explain how an R-Value is determined, but we’re not going to do that.

Instead, we are going to make this very simple. The higher the R-Value, the better the insulation is at resisting the flow of heat from one source to another.

Okay, so now we know what an R-value is and that we need at least an insulation capable of starting at R-49, what type of insulation can attain an R-value of R-49 or higher?

Differences Between Open Cell Foam Insulation and Closed Cell Foam Insulation

We offer two different variations of spray foam. But, which one is better for you? Well, that depends on your situation.

Closed cell foam insulation is extremely dense and does not expand much. Water cannot permeate the insulation and it is not very good at soundproofing.

Closed cell foam is extremely rigid and hard to damage. Of the two insulation types, it's the most expensive option because is possesses twice the insulating capacity of open-cell and other insulation materials.
Closed Cell Foam Insulation Madison Wisconsin
Open cell foam insulation is not very dense at all, but it expands a ton. Water can get through the insulation, but it is great for soundproofing. It is not very rigid and is easily damaged if contact is made. Of the two insulation types, it is the least expensive option.

For attics and commercial insulation, closed cell foam is almost always the preferred option. Ultimately, the best option is determined by your building, your needs and your budget. So, what exactly does spray foam insulation cost?
